Yeah the story is great. But not every part. The first two characters on the left in that image have probably the best storylines which actually mesh with the protagonist well. Short girl would be next with the red head and the glasses girl at the end. The pink hair girl...I don't really count her since she is part of the glasses girl story.
That is the trouble with the later stories is that they just don't mesh with the main character. It feels like you are being dragged along. You do things that contrast to the initial setup of the protagonist.

Hanako was my favorite, Rin was honestly my second favorite.
I don't think emi did anything that the character wouldn't do. Getting healthier and fighting his disease seemed natural to me. Shizune's path was bad as balls.

Shizune freaks me out.
Look at what she did to Hisao: she tied hum up and raped him just because she was bored, made it look like a romantic surprise and got away with it. Hisao could have died since he has a weak heart, but Shizune does not care. She is like a Ayn Rand character stuck on a Kawaii world.

There was a lot of press on gaming sites a while back. Apparently it is a dating sim which takes place in a school for the handicapped/terminally ill. As such all girls you court have some physical abnormality along with their personality traits.

Biggest thing that pissed me off about shizune was her fucking ending. All other endings had a great sense of closure, a sense that the characters developed and moved forwards together to overcome their disabilities.
Shizune's ending was 'School ends, they leave and break all ties to eachother. YOLO'
Pissed me off.
Context for that scene? Well shizune is deaf so you sign to her. It's meant to be the big romantic scene with her. She ties your hands up behind your back so you can't talk, thats what sailor was talking about.

Yeah Emi made some sense because he would get healthier. But I still place her 3rd. Actually finished her arc first but I just found her story to be somewhat predictable. Rin was ok but her personality was so abstract that it had me wondering the sanity of the protagonist. Story just didn't flow that well. Shizune I played last. Glad I did cause yeah it was just wtf ending.

My post is a small inside joke to those who played the game, there's no rape. probably
Katawa Shoujo at a first glance raises several red flags, after all it is a Visual Novel about handicapped girls that started on 4chan. But actualy its a very well written and tactful.
KS is very interesting, the characters have life and the dialog can be amusing, but the story is very formulaic, it is a classic monomythic coming of age tale, you know the drill:
Young lad lives a normal life, but then something happens, in this case a heart disease, and he is forced to go to a new world, in this case a special school. There he finds new freedoms and new trials, meet new friends and foes. Then he meets a special someone that challenges him on new ways, then there is sex as rite of passage, then there's a trial of fire and finally the lad becomes a man and it is time to return home and back to the known world. And the story ends.
This post getting way bigger than necessary, so I'll end it. I tend to get carried away when discussing medias that I like.

So, reading this thread, I braced myself for the madness of this game. So far, I've completed a fully successful Emi arc, and I'm somewhere in Shizune's Arc now. Besides the shed episode, which was 'interesting', my main problem is the sheer time investment in the game. Her Arc took me a good 4 hours, and I don't think I can play anything near Qwerty's fully complete run. The Skip feature's a blessing, but surely if you're playing one of these games you want to read each dialogue sequence. I'm still on the fence for this one, considering the Arc I've just played through, but I leave it 'til I've finished Shizune's to decide to go for another Arc, or just to call quits and get back to heavy-input games.

Wazulu if I can make a recommendation. Stop shizunes path right now, it is highly disappointing (at least compared to the other paths in the game)
If you want the best experience for your time go play Hanako's path, the level of beauty in that story arch is amazing.
Btw katawa shoujo is slated as a medium length VN taking about 50 hours to 100%. Longest VN I have played is 'If my heart had wings' which is rumoured to take about 120 hours to 100%.

You know, guys, I think we could do better. I really do. Let's break it down, grab all the screenshots we need to cut out these characters, and turn this into a game we can all really get behind.
Something where you can woo the girl of your dreams, get rejected but only a little, not enough to make you run off
And then when you finally break down that wall and corner the object of your affections

Gilder, man, save states. Spam like a king. Also, the game helps you out so much. It even says, in a sort of 'inside the mind of the character' "I shouldn't of done that" or "perhaps running after her was a bad idea". In that case re load the savestate at the choice.
EDIT: Oh, and looking at the game, each character only has a handful of positions and emotes, so in terms of production cost, it wouldn't be that much of a deal in comparison to any other form of game. The only simpler form of entertainment is a 'Choose your path' book. You'd just need a committed artist, writer and programmer with some simple software. Heck, Sunder, we could probably make a low-level version of one of these games. It would be terrible, and would of course include many references, but the community'd probably be able to make it.

Yeah the game helps you, you don't have to be Katsuragi Keima to figure it out, but there is an order to do some of them and if you miss one step it kills you. I hit the bad end a few times trying to get Hanako's route after I did Emi. Emi is pretty easy. Her flags are very simple. Run with her...the end. Although Emi does have one traumatic sequence which you might hit bad end if you aren't careful. But yeah save often.

Ah, was that the 'Follow her into the kitchen' or 'speak with her mother' one? I'll admit, I followed, then reloaded and chose the other option. Oh, finished the Shizune arc- is the Misha part always impossible to refuse? Despite what Qwerty said, I think I may call it a day on this one, or maybe just do Hanako's and finish there. I'm just too lazy to read all the dialogue, and I then miss subtle plot points as well. Interesting game, but I think it's got a couple of unneeded scenes and moments. That, and the dialogue needs to have liposuction.

No you can refuse the Misha route. Just do a search for a guide and you'll find one which gives you all the routes, good ends and bad ends.

You have to enjoy reading to enjoy VN's. I only do it when I want something different for a day, or I'm feeling mellow.

A Guns of Icarus Visual Novel would be the stuff of legends.
The main character can be a sky captain and instead of romancing women he would romance ships, it would be awesome.
Think about it, there story starts with a new Sky Captain in search for a ship to love, he has several options:
A bossy Pyramidion that wishes to control the sky docks and has a lot of fire power, but deep down has a good heart. Is the vanilla route, the Sky Captain must help her to move beyond the Gat/Flak combo.
A loud and obnoxious Galleon with twin hwachas that is best friends with the pyramidion, she just wants to have fun all the time and does not care about the serious side of life. The Sky captain must convince her that double hwachas are cool but theres more to life than that.
A Athletic Junker with a upbeat personality and her friend the Mobula, an odd ship with hidden depths. The crazy upbeat route, mostly involves absurd situations and insane builds.
There's a depressive broken Spire that is always sad and fears the Pyramidion. After she was broken she does not trusts captains anymore, and the Sky Captain must win her trust.
A wise and classy goldfish that tries to help the spire. This routes is kinda kiky and has lots of spicy builds and ship on ship action.
And finally, a cheerful Squid that gives insight to the Sky captain, and acts as a Greek Chorus during the game.

See that would even be possible.
We could do it in one of two ways. Go full crazy like hatoful boyfriend (a dating simulation in which everyone is birds) and have the character literally talk to the ships.
Or we could have the engineers be chicks that represent those personalities.
....fuck I actually want to do this :P

I think the main engineer would be better represented as the dating option rather than the ship. Captain trying to make the engineer install something else than the gatflak on the ship, finding each other in the process and finally gliding to victory on the chosen ship. ^^
A side quest could be to get a decent gunner, make him/her understand the tactic and work with the other crew. Having a gunner who would get along with the main engineer would help with the path to victory.

Instead of Sex as a Rite of Passage as is common o most Visual Novels we should have A Gunner as a Rite of Passage.

Make it about forming connections with your crew and your ship in the apocalyptic world.
Work with the apocalyptic feel of it all, add some sweet music.

We have a few, but the art needed would actually be quite extensive. We could use actual in game images for the ships but we would need the characters draw in a few poses at absolute minimum.
The artist could create the 'parts' for the characters (arms, legs, bodies, facial details) and the creators could piece them together as needed. Still not a simple task.
Though if anyone knows someone.....

We should at least define the plot elements, themes and main history, We can do this without an Artist. If you build it, they will come.

You could use screen shots from game instead of trying to generate your own art assets. It is a little cheep and you should defiantly ask Muse if they are OK with it before starting.

I don't think that would work. Maybe for things like establishing shots but for the actual scenes between characters it would be way too fiddly and the results you'd get would not be up to scratch. This is the kind of thing that you need an artist for.

Yeah. Like I said, for shots on board ships I can photomanipulate screenshots into some artistic style that we could use for background. I imagine others scenes might be things like hangars, taverns, cities etc.
If we tried to do this I think an artistic minimalisation would be best and easiest to achieve. In a pinch and with a bit of work we COULD use screenshots of characters as a last resort, however that is very limited and should be used as a last resort.
I am kind of keen to actually do this as a little design project I can throw in my portfolio so I guess i'll start taking some names. Who would be interested in working on this a little?

If we could somehow get our hands on the tech they used to make Aku Hana then you wouldn't even need artists to draw anything. Just live people dressed up as the characters.
If the project picks up steam, I recommend doing an open contest for a script/story. Could generate some neat community participation. Heck I might even throw in for it. I'm more of a fanfic writer in my spare time. Done one 300 page Skies of Arcadia sequel and chunks of stories after that, then a 25 episode series for my old WoW character when I was in the hospital years ago. If its an Icarus based story set in the world, I could see some ideas festering.

Yeah. See at the moment what is needed is nothing 'VN' specific, just a general idea of how we wants the story/stories to proceed and then the stories themselves.
We can also decide on things like music, tone, whether we want extra details like voice acting etc etc
I guess i'll start a google doc and give you all the power to edit it. Would that be the best way of doing this?

Sponsored it with almost a dozen steam games that I picked up during the sale. Pulled up a few judges from within the community. Gave them about a full month to submit. In the end...1 person submitted a thing about a few paragraphs long. This after they overwhelmingly voted to have it. In the end, bunch of prizes went to the one guy and the rest to the judges. Heck it wasn't a hard competition either. I even opened it up to art, poems, jokes, and anything creative. Even using ingame screenshots to tell a story.
Not that this community would do similar but you gotta do something to pull some out of the woodwork.

Is a competition the best way to do this? I think if we just open up this doc, decide on a few core things then we can start writing the stories. Everyone can have an input and work on them.

I know how that goes, During my time in my middle school newspaper team we ran an art competition every month and barely anyone participated, we had a few good submissions but yeah.
