I've been in a few matches now where one goldfish will sit at range near the floor of the map and lob Lumberjacks into our airbag. Our airbag is perma-dead, their friend takes down our hull armor, and we barely touch the ground before exploding.
There is nothing to counter this. All you have to do is sit back at range and lob lumberjacks to win.
Yes, we have been trying various combinations against this tactic. No, nothing as worked.
Either nerf the lumberjack damage, reduce airbag repair/rebuild timer, reduce Lumberjack clip, reduce Lumberjack RoF, or damage on contact with the ground.
[EDIT] Just played with this combination in a match. Using charged rounds, the hull and balloon are destroyed almost simultaneously. As long as their armor is down when they hit the ground, they will die. Which isn't too much of an issue, seeing as the Lumberjack has 5 rounds per clip with Charged rounds and fired semi-automatic.

A good squid pilot who knows how to use cover can counter a lumber fish as when its in range it will destroy the fish. Just need to find one and you're set.
-
Also if you were playing against a guy called Xemco you cant counter the lumber he's just to good.
-
Can't remember who we were playing against. It was a team of Russians.
We played against a Squid when we tried this combination. The fact the LJ kills balloon and hull simultaneously on some ships is kind of ridiculous.

Please don't post balance issues here. The sticky at the top directs you to the right threads.

That being said... There are a variety of ways to counter the lumberjack. One important trait of that gun is its arming time. If you get really close to it, then it will do next to no damage. Use cover and height to get close enough. Alternatively, you can disable it. This isn't hard. Try running a Junker with a front Mercury. It has a longer range than the lumber, and it'll destroy it in a single shot. This'll let you keep it down, leaving the Goldfish pretty much useless.
Not to mention that the lumber has a tiny arc. If you move perpendicular to it quickly, you'll throw their shots off.
-
Also, have your captain bring a drag chute so you don't fall fast when your balloon is down. It can help a lot.
-
OK so I rescind my comments I have faced up against 2 good players with the lumberjack both were on goldfishes and no one could repair anything because we got blown out of the sky and this was when I was on a Galleon and had Lumberjack, Mercury and Heavy Flak.

where was your friendly ship in all this? did you just run out on your own through the air in an all-or-nothing style charge? EVERY ship has a weakness you just need to find it. An ally ship playing snipe/Disabler while you go brawly should work... he takes down the lumbers and you run in causing their lumbers to do next to nothing damage wise. then you can toy with them while they try and flee the situation... and also on a side not. Demanding the creators to do something will NOT make it happen, this is their baby in a way. Don't insult their child's flaws.

Did you bring drogue chute? If not, that's a mistake. Not to mention if you're up against two good enemies with lumberjacks it's not entirely unexpected you're going to lose... doesn't mean it needs a nerf.

Skill indexing should have a limit though and I believe the LJ currently brings a little bit too much bang.
If anything it shouldn't be able to down a balloon with 3 shots cause the remaining two will cause severe issues, making approaching the gun extremely more difficult the closer you get due to how easier it is to get shots when you are close.

Goldfishes get pummelled by mercs. It's an easy counter.

Mercuries counter everything :P
-
They don't counter cover.

They don't counter cover.
That's map related, this is a weapons discussion as far as I am aware.
-
You can't separate the map from weapons. If there was no terrain then people would only take mercs.

Beat me to it.

People already take a lot of mercs, regardless of map with very few exceptions, unless I'm blind and can't recognize merc fire from something else, as far as I am aware your average meta-Junker or meta-Pyra will have at least 2.
Talking about comp (aka serious business) mostly of course. In pubs people tend to forego mercuries unless they are realy trying very hard or they realy want a weapon down.
Anyway, the initial comment was supposed to be a joke anyway, Mercuries don't counter everything, but as I have stated in other threads and especially you Zill and Smollett should already be aware that I don't think that weapon is okay in any way other than the disabling ability it has, I do not agree in the least with the fact that you can win by just spamming the same (note: 'same') weapon if the enemy has no nearby cover and if not win, you will severely damage them due to how easy this weapon is to aim for the ship itself and the very nature of ships having predictable movement.
Opinion of course.
-
Yea we won't delve back into another merc discussion in this thread anyway.
The separation of map and weapon though is still pertinent to the LJ, more so than a merc because of its arcs and slow projectile.

Now that I can agree with fully.

The lumberjack is a hard weapon to get a handle on unless you have an experienced gunner. So honestly to hit at far ranges ain't easy, if you just move around a bit and use evasive maneuvers and cover, you can easily get around it. Sure it's a very strong weapon, but yeah. Also the Lumberjack has the arming time which makes it hardly effective at close ranges making a brawl to them equal hell.
-
It doesn't need a nerf, what needs a nerf is lochnagar. It is far too powerful now when it completely removes all restrictions on the jack/flak.
-
Lochnagar more or less has the same arming time reduction that incendiary used to.
-
I'm just going to say it's standard practice to stay away from the front of a gold fish as that is its main damage dealer most of the time (IE: Flak Fish, Lumber Fish, Hwacha Fish, Carronade Fish, etc.) As for the lumber jack, as said before, the arming time is exploitable, if you can get in close enough it will do little damage, best of all as I've already said attempt to avoid the front of the Gold fish at all costs.

Having hard time calculating it.
But it definitely shoots as close as old incendiary did.
I'm either calculating either 132 meters min, or 88 meters min...
Hard to try to tack the -60% arming time right...but if 50% was 110...then I guess 60% would be more around 100 meters...
