Title: Trader Airship WIP
Post by: Lt. Morgan on June 17, 2013, 12:14:34 pm
Greetings Fellow Aviators! Some of you may have met me in game, and probably more then a few haven't seen me yet. Nonetheless, I am a digital arts student, and decided to mix a little of homework with fan-dom. Currently I'm in the middle of making a 3d model to texture for my class, and figured I would share the progress of it.

(http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t220/Frozt001/Airship/SSchaefer_airshipv2_zps1a237973.jpg) (http://s161.photobucket.com/user/Frozt001/media/Airship/SSchaefer_airshipv2_zps1a237973.jpg.html)

This is a bit of a quick planning for the texture and coloration of the front and side view. Mind you, it has no engines, air pump, what have you as I haven't really had any time to model those yet. Hope you enjoy nonetheless

And a little bit more on the work in progress, now in 3d!
 (http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t220/Frozt001/Airship/Airship2_zps3fc9261e.jpg) (http://s161.photobucket.com/user/Frozt001/media/Airship/Airship2_zps3fc9261e.jpg.html)

After reading some more on the fluff for Guns of Icarus, perhaps this could be a small Guild ship for traveling short distances?

And a quick coloration test.
(http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t220/Frozt001/Airship/Airshipcolorv3_zps2a8a7907.jpg) (http://s161.photobucket.com/user/Frozt001/media/Airship/Airshipcolorv3_zps2a8a7907.jpg.html)

I chose blue and yellow as the primaries for several reasons. Blue is often associated with the notion of trust, and as a trade ship that seems rather important when coming to a port! And, since blue and yellow, if done right, can look rather splendid, a bamboo coloration for the boat was inevitable.

This is pretty cool, can't wait to see some more detail!

How do you prevent the balloon from slipping from under the ropes?

Otherwise I have no questions, just thumbs up and keep up the very nice work. ^^

Could be sewn into the ropes or something.

Then again, most of the airships in GoI probably wouldn't fly without the hand-wavey physics going on!

If they are sewn, changing the ropes would be a pain in the donkey.

My original idea was there was loops that helped hold them down, kind of like what you have for holding a belt in.

So at school we have something called "Dailies", which is basically an update on the work we have to do. Since my class will be a few weeks long, I'll try to post the dailies I get for people's viewing pleasure.

This is the project as it is presently, with what is known as a Bump map and the wireframe on.

just make them wide enough so the ropes can't that easily move around, and I am convinced. :)

Followwing your progress with interest. ^^

Chances are that I'll have to wait for the MK2 to flush it out with the ropes. As the model stands is what I have to work with. the MK 2 will have at least engines and a fix to this little issue.

I've been loving the updates on this.  I really do like the idea of smaller ships that could populate a space, especially as the game expands more.

Yeah I could definately see this as a smaller Guild or Chaladonian trading vessel. Though the balloon seems a little barren.

It is barren as I am still deciding what texture format to use on it. I'm thinking of using a fabric similar to what you see on the Spire's Balloon
.

Oh I was just going from your concept in the OP, like maybe some cloths, net or rigging over the balloon itself. But on the other hand, maybe you already have a plan to make it look good, heh

Well in the wise words of professor Farnsworth, "good news everybody!"

(http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t220/Frozt001/Airship/side_zps9e633168.jpg) (http://s161.photobucket.com/user/Frozt001/media/Airship/side_zps9e633168.jpg.html)

(http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t220/Frozt001/Airship/front_zps39998bfa.jpg) (http://s161.photobucket.com/user/Frozt001/media/Airship/front_zps39998bfa.jpg.html)

I am trying to use the bump map to help with both the faded look of the balloon, and the texture. There will be more added, but there were a few things I have yet to fix. (please note, I cant adjust the rope in the current format and this isnt the view of it in the final)

So, Where is the furnace? And the engine?

I mean i dig the archeic, old-world look but it seems like this thing would just be a floating object with little practical application.

It has a rudder, but no wings, sails or engines. How does it manouver?

Doesnt seem to have any function for lifting or sinking either, Having a sealed balloon.

And if you want me to be even more annoying, Doesnt seem to have much deck-space for strapping on crates of goods.

I dont mean to be a total buzzkill here, i know you came on here looking for some fuel for your creativity, i do it myself.
But id suggest a revision of your design, taking in consideration practical aspects aswell as the purely aestethic ones. I promise you your designs will end up far better if you blend beauty with function.

I mentioned well beforehand none of these are modelled at the moment and would be made in Mk2.

I definitely like the look of it, and it could use some of the stuff previously mentioned. All I'm eager is to see how you improve, post more I'd love to see it.

As people have asked, so I shall do.

This isn't the final coloration for the model but it's pretty close considering what my teacher is asking of me.

You sure you dont wanna tie those riggings to the hull itself and not the wooden superstructure, because i gotta say it looks rather flimsy.

I can't really edit the model Until Mk2. this was more or less made so I had something for class that wasn't just another used game model. That said, I need to redo the strings anyways once I get out of my texture and lighting class.

I'll take that as a positive comment then.

and now for a new update, now with more rotation!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1o-UaKi8mo

I apologize that the timing for the rotation was off, but rendering for the video took a few hours at my school. Next week though will be the finale for this project (as far as school is concerned), and I should have a nicer video for people to see.

Ok so it has been a while, and with a new name change! (people had problems pronouncing the other one so it seemed a good idea) .

SO my finals are over and I am in the process of updating the images I have. Here is the final version of the mk1 ship:

(http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t220/Frozt001/Airship/SSchaefer_blimp_redo25_zps17fe7479.jpg) (http://s161.photobucket.com/user/Frozt001/media/Airship/SSchaefer_blimp_redo25_zps17fe7479.jpg.html)

With that said, I hope you enjoy. The review of my project by my fellow classmates was given a mixed review. Some thought it was good, while others thought I should take the class again. Just another reminder that people in this world are crazy.

When faced with a diversity of criticism its good if I discover the root of each observation rather than their generalization.  This can help me form a better idea of whether or not the  criticism is useful to me or not.
For example, if I write a short story with the intent to explore a kind of syntax or language form like Old Victorian.  If a criticism is about the story itself, that is not useful to me, though I do file it away for consideration when I intend to write a complete story.  If the critic expressed a problem with my verb form or word usage being out of period, like the wrong costume at a play, then this is of concern to me and can be used to improve my writing.

I can't judge what you've made, I don't understand the context of the class.  If it was to simply render a shape using multiple textures that casts a shadow and has the appearance of actual varnished pine (Serious, it looks like a very nice table I built years ago, I can see the grain wave from thin varnish gloss very nice touch) then this is a success.
