So I just want to throw this idea out there to see what you all think. I want to see more options for ship customization in the game that effects performance. For example let us choose form a list of different type of engines that change the ships states slightly. Like one engine type could have better thrust and is lighter so the ship can accelerate faster but has less health. You could also choose to take less armor to help over all acceleration and maneuverability but obviously you are more vulnerable. This would force you to choose between making your ship a bit faster at responding to a threat or being able to tank it our for longer. I think this would add a lot of fun flexibility to the game and help change up the meta without taking away from the game. Let me know your thoughts, and share any ideas on other ways we could tweak our ships!

this is like the anti-thesis of what guns is trying to avoid and its so freakin arbitrary.
if you want a certain type of style then pick the right ship and the right loadout. this padded min/maxing is so unnecessary.
-
I mean, I get what you mean, and I kinda want something like this too, but ship balance is really precise and ship's rolls are pretty well defined. You should know this as a (damn fine) competitive pilot. In my humble opinion, this sort of thing would add a bunch of half-breed ships with no real purpose.
Edit: This does sound like a lot of fun, and I'd be 100% up for this in co-op, but for PvP, I can't see this working
-
Something I've thought about too sometimes (earlier today even), the PvP balancing concerns are real but id second this for co-op and eventually adventure mode. Possibly trying to PvP balance it after having it in another mode first.
Thoughts of earlier today:
Custom gun mountings
Reinforced Mounting - +health, - arcs
Swivel Mount - +arcs, - health
Superior Auto-loaders - +reload speed, - health
Although on further thought for PvP with the right tweaking the balance could end up only being a problem in a small minority of games (and possibly turn stomps into faster stomps) and great fun for the rest so maybe it would be worth it.
edit
If this happened i would want at least 10 customization slots for each ship and I'm sure some people would push towards 50

Perhaps in Adventure Mode, it may come up before 2020.
But for skirmnish - no.
-
Interesting idea, but the very simplicity of this game for all the depth and teamwork it offers is what grants it boatloads of charm... No pun intended.

There would be one ship setup that is the best and that would be the one everyone uses.

is it? Right now? What's the meta ship right now?

Hwacha fish
-
With Metamidion and Blenderfish sufficiently nerfed, they're still viable with out being the ultimate pick-me-to-win ships anymore. Honestly, there's no real meta ship right now
-
Hwacha fish
Easily countered by many ships and weapons, only "Meta" because of its ease of use.

That's what i thought too. The game has many issues but balance isn't awful right now.

With Stamina reloads its gained more traction.
-
Hwatcha stamina reload is not significant. You can briefly reduce reload by 1.6 seconds max, but stamina refills too slowly even with good disables. The major change was -30% jitter so you can use burst at 700m now.

I would say that 700m is quite the over-statement...
The rough maximum effective ranges for non-buffed hwacha are 300m for normal, 400m for burst, and 800m for heavy. With buff adding about 30m to normal and burst, and about 70m to heavy. But either way, on most maps, the normal ships that you'll see hwacha on will be usually engaging below the 400m mark anyway, using heavy is really an exception for most maps and you really end up using it maybe once or twice a match and usually end up regretting you haven't waited a bit longer to get in and use burst on them.
-
It works up to 700m with buff burst. The old hwatcha was effective at 400m. I pair buff burst hwatcha with lesmok gat where it used to be heavy clip gat.

Most ships do have default loadouts everyone uses.. So it is already like this.. You'd just be adding more stuff to it.. Most ships would have a default "use these parts" loadout .. that everyone would use..
That said I don't really want customizable parts like this in PVP .. Ships are designed like a character class in an MMO.. Where it can do certain things and is good at certain things and not so good at other things.. So you can just pick the ship that best suits your playstyle or the given map/enemies.. Maybe co-op it'd fit.. Since balance isn't the same...
For pvp how ever cosmetic ship parts could be fun.. Though useless.

FU** THAT NOISE!!! that's just adding more bu*****t!
I would much prefer they come out with brand new ships to add more variety. Seriously they have never come out with a new one and its not like they need to reinvent the wheel for each one just have one with 2 guns on the front like the pyrmadon but with completely different stats.

They added the mobula post-release. And that is a pretty uninteresting suggestion for a new ship.

No, there need to be two Pyramidions. Fighterplane Pyra, which is lighter, more manoueverable, and generally has higher accel
And tank-ram Pyra- Basically the current one, but with armor/hull values that have it not dying when you breathe on it.

so I stand corrected!
however I beg to differ on the boring ship idea,

You wanna go MATE! 1 vs 1 me scrub!
No seriously though I've gotten in the habit of exaggerating and expressing a lot of emotion in my opinions of forums cause thats the only way to get people to read or get a response.

if only the pyramidion arches were angled like the side mounts of the spire (one on top, one deck level), they could re-instate the "tank ship" pyra since the sweetspot for "meta" would be much harder to attain, thus giving every ship facing it a chance of survival. I'll make a drawing now to explain
-
there
(http://i.imgur.com/9H5hK5S.jpg)
the two front weapons have 30° outward arches, making meta much harder. Pilot and gungineer upstairs can take care of balloon, pilot vision is that of a proper tank with limited arches of vision, the gunner and engi on lower deck can rush to hull allowing the sacred equation "1 wrench, 1 spanner on hull. 1 wrench, 1 spanner on balloon".
all in all with a resume of lots of hull, lots of armor and heavy weight is a ship that relies on ramming and "wiggle" between the two mounts for killing. Still dead in the water against attacks from the side.

It does say ingame "blahblah has destroyed blahblah Heavy Engines", why define that the engine is 'Heavy'?

Not quite the right thread, but I shall answer none the less. the heavy engine is the center engine and is primarily responsible for forward thrust. It also does't turn the ship at all. Every ship except the Squid has a heavy engine. The Squid has 4 light engines
-
So, I've been thinking about this for a while. But what about a "Mirror" option for ships. Obviously, symmetrical ships like the mobula or goldfish wouldn't gain anything from this, but the pyra, the squid, the galleon, even the spire (although I don't think much) would have a pretty different play style if the ship were "flipped". So,for example, the pyra could be in "mirror" mode and it would have its bottom deck guns on the right side. I think it could make play style a little more varied and when coop stuff comes out and there has to be "escort" missions or "defense" maps you wouldn't be limited on which side of your ship had guns.
I don't know much about balancing or programming, I'm more of a casual gamer, so I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of what it would take for something like this. But, I thought it might be a nice way to improve variety without changing (in theory) much about balancing or even take long to implement.
-
It wouldn't really be much of a different playstyle so much as just a different approach. Squid would still bifecta, just from the other side. Galleon would still have a light gun paired with 2 heavies, just on the other side. Spire it might allow for different gun combos...
-
I don't think it would effect the actual game much, if at all. What it could do, is mess with game instincts. An experienced engie, suddenly goes the wrong way in their repair cycle, a pilot trying to protect his blindside, accidentally leaves it wide open.
-
I think a team playing a mirrored pair could have some fun with it, two galleons advancing strong side out or trying to flank a ship with the strong side facing in on each. Personally i think swapping the ladder and chimney on a mobula would be op and also confusing for the snowman.
-
I looked in there, I didn't see a snowman.........
-
He's scared of ship themes and hides further down where you can't see him if you use one.
-
Ahhhhh, the pilot may have had a theme. Thanks for that.
-
Would be interesting, but there would be so many OP things about it. Extra speedy engines on the squid, but less turning ability. Just use the phoenix claw to counter, and some good engis on the engines. But like it said, an interesting thought.
