Title: Training Day
Post by: Shinkurex on March 08, 2013, 08:58:05 am
Alright... So this is largely due to the fact that I'm tired of people complaining about stacked teams, and the Veterans not bestowing knowledge on the new guys...

I am proposing a training day for the new guys. I would need at least 4 Veterans (3 if you want to call me a vet :P) to volunteer to be instructors each captaining a ship. The first couple of minutes of game play will be going over the ship, and player tools... and then we can brawl it out... There are a couple of different ideas that I have, but this thread is just to see if there is interest out there to do this, and if there are some Vets willing to volunteer (Which I have no doubt there are)

I'd help, but it would probably be best if somebody with a mic did so instead.

These games are happening already, plus occasional Sandbox tutorials.  I've done a couple, I know several forum names run them a lot.

They need to be evening sessions (GMT), because daytime games (GMT) are suffering.. cultural.. difficulties at the moment.

I figured there where, but nobody has advertised them on the forums.... Good idea on the evening sessions

You can usually get a Game or Ship filled fast if you advertise that you'll help any new players out a little, I've never had a shortage of willing to learn lads whenever I did that! It'd be great if we could get some people together to host a full 2v2 game. Put one veteran aboard every ship, and then approach things slowly. Did that once with another captain, writing everything in the regional chat once ingame. It worked, but was a hellish load of work :P

Playing the Sandbox map with other newbies is a great idea Pickle, I'll have to try that one out!

Even better now that the Captain can engineer a crisis situation and then explain how to deal with it.

I guess it'll work best if we all make use of our social tab, remember the players that offered to volunteer here and drop a note when one of us starts a Practice Match for new players. In any case, hit me up if any of you is about to do something like that, and I'll help out.

Another option would be fixed dates, like the Battle against the Art Team ones, but I'm not sure we've got the resources for that?

I was wondering about that... Maybe do this once a month or something, but I haven't really thought that part out yet, I want to get a group of trainers together first, and then decide it amongst us... I will definitely call on you :)

Could easily be done once each week. I have time to set away 2-3 hours once a week

Post by: Kyren on March 08, 2013, 01:03:46 pm
If the dates could be fixed like the Battle the invincible Art Team events, you wouldn't have to rely on a single team of trainers either. There's a ton of CAs, and I'd say they're bound to help in that. Probably Muse could even enter the dates in the Steam GoIO Event Calendar, to have them popping up?

hmmm.... I could do that.... so then the question is what day? Saturdays are Cogs day... Sunday, I'm usually out most of the day (that doesn't mean that it can't be Sunday, but I would like it not to be :) )...Friday may work.... idk

Hmm, considering that we want to get as many people as possible over the course of time, I'd say we let it alternate? One week Monday, one week Tuesday, one week Wednesday.. We'd have to strongly rely on the rest of the community for this, but by now there should be a big enough experienced playerbase to draw from.

If people see the Battle the Invincible Art Team pop up at their Steam account, they'd surely see the "New Player Training Game" as well. With some luck, not only new ones would respond to that call, but also veterans that'd be willing to aid a hand, even if they don't step up here on the forum.

If it's a single day every week, I'd fear we'd let many people slip trough that net.

Alright,

I've decided to start this on monday, and alternate it every week, so that we can reach the max amount of players... So the Schedule is:

Monday the 11th
Tuesday the 19th
Wednesday the 27th

and so on.... Due to work and other obligations... The starting time would be 8 PM EST - 10 or 11 PM EST depending on volume of people who would like to learn.... I know people are in different timezones, so if you would like to setup something in your own timezone that's fine...

Ouch, that's always somewhen in the early morning for me - meaning 2 AM and such lovely stuff. We'll have to make a seperate table for the Europeans, I suppose. How many of the volunteers here would be present around more civil times for Europe? Something along 6-9 PM, GMT +1?

And I'm with you! I won't get home today anymore to dish out a cool list of possible dates anymore; but I'd suggest that we do our first European Session somewhen around the end of this week, and then try to join in the day-schedule of the EST sessions.

Once we've got a schedule set up and both "groups" working, contacting Jess or someone else from the Muse Team might be a good idea too, the Training Days could surely be posted in the official GOIO-Group's events.

Very well, we'll have this to get moving somehow for the European Timezone. We're a little late already compared to our EST mates. I sincerely hope this is not because there is a lack of discipline aboard your ships. I for one, can account for all my AI crew. Anyways.

I'd say we give it a try on this Thursday or Friday, starting around.. 7? 7 PM, GMT +1. 19:00 Uhr. 14th or 15th of March. That'd give us enough time still to ask for a calendar entry in the Official Group, if we sound convincing enough.

What's your say?

Right now I think its just me and phoebe on the europe team, so if neither of us can the dates thats not good.

So I asked for some of the european CA's to back up, that would be awsome, I can only do it every other week or so.

so when its 20pm CET we have the european training games, and then 6 hours later the US games start.
Title: Re: Training Day

I'd certainly make things easier for Muse, because they'd only have to advertize one event. This would give us Europeans a waiting time of a good week now, though. I had thought that we wanted to come up with our mirror event rather fast, that's why I suggested those days, but with me it's allright to have a break and then go for it together with the US games!

If we could get all the devs and ca's in it, and have every member invite good and new players to it, it'll be easy advertisement.
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/GOIO_Training

As for the dates, I think it's easiest to follow the US training dates, so we have a training game at 8pm CET, and then 6 hours later at 8pm EST.

Then trainers can also quickly create an event in the group if they feel like they want to train some new players outside of the schedule.

---

this way we follow the regular schedule, but can also help other days, if we cant be there for the official dates.
Title: Re: Training Day

Aye, we CA's just got a Mail with your request, and I'm sure that will draw the one's in as well who don't frequent the forum that often. I'm already a member of the Training Group, so I'll do just fine with that. Next Tuesday I'll be late to the party, because my Spanish course finishes just at half past 8, so.. And on the coming weeks, I'll be on holidays as well, so I'll be absent on the US dates for the coming 2 to 3 weeks, sadly.

I guess I'll post a discussion in the Training Group, asking if we can get something together for this thursday or friday. I'm not sure though if that can be advertized with the official group in time then?

How does training day actually work? Will there be a 2v2 server named "training day"? Do the vets act as captains or instruct new captains? Are there any drills or protocols such as don't attack for the first 5 minutes, attack the allied ships to get accustom to shot drop, or sit still and let the new guy find the trifecta sweet spot?

I would like to help.

We typically act as captains and give quick tips for engineering and gunning. We take as much time to answer any questions. We start fighting when all captains type ready in the chat.

Also we vary the map size. The first one we started 2v2, then up to a 3v3.

One thing we all need to work on is make sure the training day are for new players. After a few training matches, it eventually had more experienced players join.

If you're willing help, then it would be appreciated.

I don't think we are reaching the intended audience. I was only able to participate in one of the training sessions, and there were more Vets than trainees it seemed. I hate to say it, but the type of people we are looking for are the type of people who hit Quick Join. If nothing else we can teach them why it is important not to use Quick Join.

I propose next training day we get 4 captains to start a game with empty ships, then let people quick join it. It seems to be the most efficient way to attract noobs to your ship. If there are more than 4 vets the next group of 4 can start another server.

Having participated in only one training match I can't say I am an expert on these things.

I see a big problem here, the Training Event was only scheduled for EST time in the official GoIO Group, there's nothing for CET?

You're right, the separate european event wasn't made. However, Skrimskraw made an announcement for 8pm CET and i reposted info to russian steam group and community board. So hoping people will come

Problem is quick joiners dont want to train. They pressed quick join to not listen to you and pretty much do as they please. Which funnily enough could be done in sandbox all day but lets not go there...

Another issue is that not many lvl 1's are logging into the forums, fb page, website to even see the matches. I cant force people to want to learn, so we do what we can I suppose. Week one had a lot more new guys in it though.

Well, the Training Group is fine enough, but we'd need it scheduled in the official GoIO group, like the EST one :/ I'll write Jess a PM and ask if that can be fixed still.

I Quick Joined my first few games, and I wanted to learn. I have had many experiences with quick joiners wanting to learn. I have also had many more experiences with quick joiners not wanting to learn. The problem (in my eyes) is quick join is not very conducive to learning. The captain has most likely given his battle plan briefing before the quick join pops up and is too busy shouting orders to the effective crew to make time to teach the new guy. There is generally a collective groan when a level 1 gunner shows up in the middle of a fight. Some times the best thing you can do (if you want to win the game) is to ask him to leave the ship. I was thinking a low intensity training day game would be a better way to educate quick joiners than a more competitive atmosphere.

I would like to try an experiment on the weekend with three other veteran captains. We create a server named "don't join me" or "quick join experiment." Any veteran friends that join as crew we politely ask to leave. We start the game as soon as we have 4 captains, and sit under truce untill we have a few quick joiners who we have given the pre game briefing. We take galleons or junkers with sub optimal weapon layouts and make high speed firing passes at each other to give the quick joiners practice repairing and shooting without the "oh crap oh crap we are all going to die" pressure of a real fight. Once the quick joiners get a little bit of confidence, we settle in for a slugging match to end the game. The next game (hopefully the quick joiners will stick around for) we will do a pre game optimal loadout briefing and lay into each other with our regular fury.

Does this sound like a good idea, and who wants to help me?

Aye, I wasn't very happy to hear that Quick Joiners might be the bigger group to reach, but I'd definitely be in to help them out. I won't be here this and the next weekend though, so I'll only be able to help out.. in April again :/
Title: Re: Training Day

@Kyren
I might be wrong. It could be that there are tons of new players reading the facebook, forums, or main webpage, that will join the next training day match and learn a ton. Like wise most quick joiners could be trolls or 8 year olds who just want a steam punk Call of Duty experience. My suggestions come from my limited experience with one training day and a whole bunch of quick joiners on regular games.

Looks like mid game quick join is getting the axe thanks to this thread (https://gunsoficarus.com/community/forum/index.php/topic,368.msg5791.html#new). Please disregard my earlier suggestion of using Quick Join as a way of attracting new players to a training game.

training session went well tonight.

after 1.5 hours of training we decided to give the players a taste of hard combat, and some stuck around.

Thanks to qwerty for showing up and give some advertising.
thanks to ataris for doing the work this week
and thanks to all the veterans for showing up and helping.

should we do it again next week?
Title: Re: Training Day
Post by: Ataris on March 28, 2013, 06:11:45 pm
Sure we do!

Things gone better this week than the last one. Less sharp angles, more new players... we were stably running 3v3 game almost full and got even more interested to join. If it goes this well, we should start 4v4 or a couple of 2v2/3v3 games to equalise demand and offering. And we have enough experienced volunteers online to do this.

Maybe it's a good idea to specify a day for the Training, running the same day weekly could be more comfortable for both instructors and instructed.

And huge thanks to everyone participated! It's a great feeling when you see the event you help to organize is going well.

Just wanted to update you all on yesterdays Training day for 8PM EST. First, Thanks to all the experienced players that helped out. It was a pretty successful session, and we were able to fill up a 2v2, and have some great fun. At the end, we did a harpoon squid match (To which SOMEONE brought a flare gun :P)... Anyway, the next Session for this side of the world is next Friday at 8PM EST. I look forward to seeing you guys there :)

If you need experienced players for EU the training day I am happy help. :D

I really love the wonderful atmosphere in GoIO community :D, and I think it is important that we pass it to the new players by not only teaching them the basics of how everything works, but also how wonderful this game's community atmosphere is by doing things like the training days.

Skrim's not coming today, so we're short one regular Trainer. Last time we did extremely well with making the Training Day a Beginners Match and holding it for 2 hours, but unless we get a good number of volunteers for today I'd make it 9 to 10 again! The reason being, that it's a bit difficult for meto be online for 2 hours straight  today :/

I'll start PMing now though, and we'll see what we can get together :)

tbh I play every day I and try to give training when I'm online, (something I did even before there was an achievement for it)- but getting tied down to a schedule is a bitof a disincentive for me and I think it's the same for players I see, plus most new players don't really seem to want to plan ahead, but are happy to join something if it's there when they are online. Can I suggest it would it be more flexible to be able to approach the CA or MUSE on duty to announce that a targeted sandbox session will be happening in the next 10 mins sort of thing?

We're mainly doing the Training Days because they allow us to easily get a bunch of Trainers together, not so because they allow us to get so many trainees together :P Because there are literally always players in the game who would willingly join in a training session. With this format, we can usually offer 4 ships and aboard every ship a senior player to help with loadout, strategy in battle and everything else.

Hmmm, while I really like to hear that you're doing guided Sandbox tours there's not much I can do - or other CAs, for that matter. CAs and Trainers (who are sponsored by CAs) can join Beginners matches. CAs also have access to the forum calendar here, but we can't announce things in the Official Steam Group or in the announcement-board ingame.

As far as I know, we could only help you by joining in the Sandbox Training or by adding yellow names to the lobby chat, advertising your sandbox! The Forum and Steam events are... well, not that successfull.
Title: Re: Training Day
Post by: Calico Jack on July 17, 2013, 07:29:36 pm
Perhaps I should rephrase my previous post, in essence I meant to say I believe I see a niche that needs  filling,

Just after I posted I grabbed the first CA on the ca list and gave it a shot, having a yellow tag posting in general chat with me worked quite well. Possibly with some regularity players might start watching for sessions - it did happen when I was doing this before.

Something I tried before was to try to train crew in a 2v2 match but the game lacked the ability to comm between teams to co ordinate attacks in the initial training part, but party chat has it covered this time around.

Captain Coldcurse - I'm guessing it's to stop people spawning in and dominating the match basically.

I tried running training matches before the level filters were introduced and generally speaking we got maybe 2 straight matches before higher level players would spawn in as captain and it took a lot of prompting to get them to give up the places.

If you want to help in Training Days, ask one of the CAs who run those things in advance to request permission for you. Then you'll be able to access the level-restricted training matches.
