Now I just need someone to sing it and record it:

Now this is a story all about how;
Their squid got flipped; turned upside down
I'd like to take a minute just float right there -
I'll tell you how to win these battles cruisin' mid-air.

With a crew on my Galleon that I nursed and raised;
On the dunes  is where I spent most of my days.
Chillin' out, floatin', cruisin' all cool,
Once in a while shootin' some fools.

When a couple of Squids who were up to no good,
Started makin' trouble over worthless loot.
I got in one little fight; my crew got scared!
I said, "Man these guns and take back the air!"

I turned towards the Squid, and when it came near,
The license plate said "Shoot Me" and I saw Bubbles in my mirror
If anything I could say that this man was rare,
But I thought "Forget it; our airspace is not for share!"

My crew fired at the squid about seven; eight times
and I yelled to the Engie "Gonna ram; hold tight!"
Looked at the explosion; I was finally there...
To sit proud at the helm;- waiting for the next to dare..

Noo no no I apologize for my bad phrasing;- what I meant is I am gunning; then I press E to dismount the gun to start spotting. :)

Thank you Admiral, that's good; I am always around gun mounts when spotting because usually I am gunning and just press E to spot - so I should just move away a little bit

General Discussion / Details on spotting
« on: March 09, 2013, 09:08:30 am »
Hi  :)

Could someone educate me a bit better on how spotting and shaking exactly works?

Sometimes it works just fine; sometimes it just does not; so I am really starting to wonder what the general rules for spots and shakes are - perhaps people could start off helping me by answering these questions:

1)  Is there a minimum or maximum range at which I can spot ships in conjunction with the zoom level while spotting?

Why I ask :  Sometimes I can spot ships without even zooming at all;- just clicking on the ship in the distance and it'll register at spotted.  Other times I am zoomed in on a ship and it won't spot for the life of me no matter where I'm pointing while clicking.

2) Is there a known bug which prevents someone from succesfully placing a spot?

Why I ask : Like above; often a ship is within 500-600m and no matter what I try it just won't spot.  Just clicking the ship;- zooming on it first; trying various zoom levels; aiming for every component on the ship before clicking - nada.

3) When can you spot other ships in (dust)clouds?

Why I ask : Often my crew seems to spot ships just fine in clouds;- but I for the life of me can't seem to do it.  I play on pretty low graphics so my clouds are a bit thicker and less transculent;- but even if the ship is in vision I can't spot them.  Is there a trick to spotting ships that are in clouds?

4) If the vision ships is partially obstructed; can you still spot them?

Why I ask : I have a lot of trouble spotting a ship if for instance the front end of my own crews ship is only just slightly covering vision;- or their front end is just barely behind an object.  Pretty much their entire ship is fully clear in vision but even close range I can't seem to get a spot on it.

5) When do you have a succesful shake?

Why I ask : Often when I'm flying my squid I just try to shake them in clouds; but the open eye never dissapears.  Most noteable on dunes when I dissappear fully into dust clouds and exit the other end my ship will have suffered damage but I just haven't managed to lose the spot on my ship.

6) Any additional information

Why I ask :  If you have any other things or rules to spotting and shaking I would really appreciate all that information ;- helpful tips or issues you know about

Thank in advance!  :-*

I've changed all my ship names to reflect my joining of the Ducks.

I haven't renamed my Spire yet.

The Lounge / Re: Introductions!
« on: March 08, 2013, 08:52:25 pm »
Well some people have seen me floating about... perhaps an introduction is in order.

I'm Phoebe; which not so coincidentially is also my real first name;- little did I know I would be stuck with it as a player name.  :P

I'm 32 years old; divorced and mother of a young daughter growing to be as stubborn as myself.  I've always shared an interest of playing games with my ex husband and Guns of Icarus Online is one of the first games I actually purchased for myself after a friend of mine who goes by the nickname "Paddypower" recommended it to me.

I have a two shift job in human resources and I have a degree in public relations;- I wanted to be a relationship therapist when I was young but that didn't quite work out so I had several jobs in marketing, human resources, public relations and finance.

My friends usually call me "Tushy"  which has been my nickname since High School.

I haven't really settled on names for my ships to keep but I definitely like flying the Galleon most because well... you know; women and driving - The Galleon goes in slow motion so I can somewhat handle that.

I really like the Lumberjack as a gunner because that's pretty much the only gun I can say I'm good at and I find it tremendously fun and satisfying to get a good lock going on from large distances.

Most of all I just really like Guns of Icarus Online because I can hop on for a couple of quick matches; find and meet new people in between them because the lobbytime is always atmospheric and friendly - and just generally have a good time without too much of a competitive spirit.

International Community Boards / Re: Suggest a community board here!
« on: March 08, 2013, 08:41:45 pm »
Hello;

Eventhough I don't really know how many we really are at this moment in Guns of Icarus Online - most online games have quite a large representation of native dutch speakers mainly from the Netherlands and Belgium.

I don't really know what I need to do to really gauge our numbers but I'm pretty confident we're growing already and it would be useful for some if not those adding in the future to have a community section in our own language.

Not entirely for the language though because we're generally quite adept at speaking english;- we're just kind of notorious for setting up native dutch mini-communities, guilds, clans or groups in many games and a Dutch subsection greatly motivates doing so or really just enables people to find one another.

I'm also in process of promoting Guns of Icaruns Online with groups and communities from my past and a large portion of those are native Dutch as well.

I have the time frame and drive to moderate it;- that's no problem - I can also translate all the official documents or introductions back and forth.

The Pit / Re: "Guns of Icarus" fans, holding game back.

It kind of goes both ways.

For the most part people who choose to play a certain game are somewhat determined to at least learn the basics;- and I'd say the majority of these players will fare just fine through trial and error.

What doesn't work is when you;- as more experienced player - try to help them out and end up overflowing them with information they don't yet need to understand or learn;- I've witnessed a good example of this yesterday.

I remember that I really had no clue on my first match.  I didn't know how repairing something worked;- or even how to tell what is being damaged.   I didn't know what kind of damage I was dealing with a gun;- and I was falling off ships constantly trying to navigate from battle station to battle station;- exploring ships even in times of stress.

It is perfectly understandable when you have a pretty fresh crew just out of the crib trying to figure the game out that you get a little frustrated or annoyed - but games can last as quick as 5 minutes and generally do not last very long;- so it's a good sacrifice to make to just keep your head cool and give them some time to explore while you just point out the very basics they might be needing to know at the moment.

A completely new player does not need to know what a goldfish is or that flak cannons are best used to take out enemy weapons.   New players do not really need to be told just yet to take a certain ammo type because it's good.  For their first couple of matches we just need to have that little bit of patience to let them figure out some things on their own and get accustomed to the keys and controls - then how to seat a weapon; how to start repairing something.

That always has been and will be the best approach to welcome new players into your game;- people who you consider the biggest noobs on your crew are potentially your best friends and most skillful players a couple of weeks down the road;- all they need is a little bit of time.

People who can't figure the game out; can't handle someone getting a little impatient with them and people who do not have the basic interest in this game to search for a manual; forum guide or seek out the help of a CA or any player at all probably are not the target audience for this game after all.   Now it would be a really bad marketing approach to not care about these players and motivate them to play Guns of Icarus Online;- but you catch my drift.

My advice goes -

If you're the type of person that doesn't mind or even likes to help other people out;- please take into account their learning curve and maximum attention span to detail.  Take it slow; just hit them with a couple of basics and leave some of it for them to learn on their own.   Don't tell them what is good and what is not good before they know how to use it in the first place.

Chances are you will only stress them out with too much information that isn't important yet and then get frustrated because they don't show immediate improvement on basics - a common phenomenon where you might have the impression they are just really not listening to you while they're just confused and unable to distinct what is good and helpful from what is fundamental.

If you're the type of person that simply can't stand having to deal with crew members who don't understand the game yet;-  don't lash out or let them know you're frustrated.  They'll get the hang of it.  Games only last anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes and rarely go much longer than that so just suck it up and see it as a challenge on your own performance before heading out and finding a new lobby for your next round.
