Giving players waiting for matchmaker one (or a choice) of the running matches to watch as a spectator while still searching.
Even if it had to be more limited than standard spectator mode for whatever technical reasons I think it would be a huge improvement to the "Waiting for 1 more players" experience.
Is it possible?
Would you enjoy it?
Would spectating with an entire crew form be fun?

searching doesn't take that long.
being sent to a simulated situation like sandbox would be better.
e.g. like a firing range. or spawning in a ship with hull balloon broken and you gotta rebuild.

I like the simulation idea! A firing range would be awesome, maybe with Artemis, Hades, lumberjack or merc and shoot at training dummies as they fly past.

I say that and the dummies spawn stationary at randomised ranges in sets of 5.
Plus the loadout and class can be set on the character screen via clicking a tick box on a preset and a preferred gun.

I've got a better idea: Why not just have a Pong/Tetris minigame pop up when you're searching? Those games are undoubtedly more fun than shooting target dummies over and over again!

best idea make dire the target

It can take quite a while sometimes, and during higher population times it could be good to have a distraction and the option to find the kind of match you want in 5-10min rather than dropping all your settings inside 30s and putting you in an unwanted 4v4, server on the other side of the world etc.
A firing range or mini-game are good ideas. The chance of anything being implemented probably depends on effort to make it and the server load it would make, a mini-game would do well for both.
