Glowwater Thralls existed. Founder of ryders, Archriel was still playing. Hephestus challenge was starting. Blenderfish was considered as good ship. Engineers were better than gunners at all ships, except galleon.

- the only way to know the enemies hull was down was by staring at feed in the top corner all match and then shouting some nonsense word to the rest of your crew
- when the world wasn't so overcast
- seeing the first players reach level 10, then 12, then 15
- You couldn't tell who was in what clan
- Waiting for a CA to come and manually start your lobby after the TGS viewers influx melted the servers
Oh, I see a few 'bugs' listed here too. My favourite was probably the 'Goldfish ram suicide explosion' bug.

I'm not that old, but..
Match Maker was brand new, maybe a day or two old, so the salt was real.
Tover Twatch was a competitive team.
Pyramidion was the only choice of ship.
Flamer was something to be feared by every ship and ship build so long as the ship didn't have great chem cycles.
People knew what a chem cycle was! (Mention chem cycle now and people get confused!)
Hwacha was just the Lion Gun.. Now it's the LION GUN FUCK YEAH!
People who piloted Squids were either bat shit crazy or incredibly good pilots.
SPQR had two teams that competed almost every event!
Cakes were incredibly active.
Gents were well known and active.
LeonXross 4v4 with 4 mobula all Hades, sitting ontop of each other to make a highly visible, very deadly tower.
Richard LeMoon harpoon moonshine galleon.
Any weapon combination on a pyramidion was somewhat effective.
Blenderfish were in a good state and often picked over hwacha fish.
Light carronade component sniping.

Or you get even older and remember when it was three times as bad as now (and people said it wasn't OP).
Oh and, engaging 1v3 as Squid in Crazy Kings, defending one single point so the entire enemy team couldn't capture it.
Speaking of Squids, when you could activate Tar by switching to that tool for a fraction of a second and away again so your engines won't get damaged.

One ship point blocking wasn't that long ago, but I do miss the excitement of being outnumbered and stubbornly holding the point through fancy flying, tar, and a crew on full repair mode.

Flakfish domination, Lochnamerc, and the Squid was not yet invented (nor the Mobula), Russian Release 'J' Invasion, but I bet those have already been mentioned.
Also, my personal favorite, when the ship masses were programmed incorrectly, which meant that a Squid could harpoon a galleon and whip it around the map into a cliff. Or, you could harpoon two galleons and slam them together.

Being able to name your lobby "MINE MOBULAS ONLY" so people joining would know what they were getting into.

Metamidions, Lobbies of Icarus without Matchmaker (a.k.a. the Eternity Clock) even with hundreds of players online (back in the days when you would create a lobby with a map you actually wanted to play!), skill based leveling. Competent, friendly crews, a feeling of actually being in command of a well tuned fighting machine. Those oh so satisfying moonshine-driven Pyramidion ram kills with all guns blazing to soften up the target first. Not having to soften up the target if it was a Spire. :D
I really miss the old game, and didn't really realize it until I read this thread. :'( The current version is really formula and quite boring, it wants to be a modern FPS game with a retro feel and fails everywhere :(
