Title: First mate feature
Post by: Eerie on July 07, 2013, 08:59:01 pm
I'd like to suggest a feature in which a captain can choose one crew member to be a first mate.
Advantages of being a first mate would include the ability to hear captain chat but not speak and ability to override controls just as a captain can, but they are unable to override the captain.

Just a little thing me and some friends came up with

I like this idea.

Sometimes, especially in the chaos of a 4v4, I just plain forget to tell my crew the general plan.

A gunner who can hear that the friendly Galleon is targeting the enemy Goldfish without me having to relay anything would be pretty nice.

However, all that chatter might be distracting for the average crewman, so maybe a pop-up in the lobby: "Your Captain has selected you to be his First Mate! This will allow you to hear the Captain's chat, but not contribute. Do you accept?"

That way, both parties need to be willing to participate.

This is a good idea, especially if the captain disconnects for one one reason or another

I don't know about listening in on captain chat, but I like the Kick off gun feature, and designating who takes over if the captain disconnects. There have been times where I have been effectively captaining a ship when the captain disconnected, but couldn't hear captain chat or use the F1,F2,F3 keys.

I thought the person in the 2nd slot got control of the F keys if the captain DC'd or left.

How about simply using the lobby ship roster order to designate the roles as it is with captain - slot 1 = captain, uses captain chat, slot 2 co-pilot/bo'sun hears captain chat and can access the current captain's tools etc?

Currently the closest player to the captain spot (in the lobby) gets control of ai if captain DCs but not captains chat or anything else.

I fully Support this idea... that is all.

Remember that the "z" or "Party" channel is coming in 1.3

This is far more flexible than a "first mate" option, any combination of crew members across the team can be added to the Party channel.

And any combination of players from opposite teams, different matches, etc. Surely there is no way that could possibly be abused :D

Yes, but that's a whole new channel with potentially a whole new purpose.

Captain's chat is normally used for 85% strategics; 10% random chat, banter, and "good kill;" and 5% "oops, wrong chat."

While more flexible, party channel is also less specific.

A first mate feature uses a chat we already have, with a (more or less) defined purpose, WITHOUT "too many cooks in the kitchen" trying to strategize.

party chat? good gods imagine a 4 v 4 with everyone talking on that? ....good lord

some sort of priority will need to be in force so that it hushes others over more important.. i'd say like:

P= Priority

P1  > P2  > P3

Captain > Crew > Party

my reasons are:
1: Only the Captains can hear captain chat... others would just receive  P2 > P3

2: Crew is the people on your ship, so its more likely that their chat is to affect your ship that you are on

3: Party sounds like what one would be... noisy possibly blocking out ANYTHING else said by others

Now just imagine if you had to handle crew chat, captain chat, party chat, and teamspeak.

The ability to lower or mute other channels while others are being used based on priority settings that can be changed would be incredibly useful.

There could also be a small list of crew members with icons (see this thread (https://gunsoficarus.com/community/forum/index.php/topic,1256.0.html)) that shows which chat channel they're using at the moment.

Hopefully Party chat is as far as they go and don't make a global chat.. too many problems and not many/no benefits :P

The first mate should be promoted to captain if the captain disconnects, quits or etc.

Yeah, much of the time I don't want my crew second guessing my shoddy tactics.
It helps prevent mutiny if I can tightly control information they get.

Mostly, I just don't want them acting on the orders of another captain either purposely or accidentally.
I'd like to think I generally know what I want them shooting at!

Well the Idea sounds good and with the new crew formation features they may be able to make it so you choose whether or not someone is first-mate as most people know me and Twinkie are inseparable so I would like to give him more of a leadership role when I'm otherwise engaged.

Actually I'm playing most of the time as captain and pilot and my friend plays a gunner. We work perfectly together as he sits in the belly of my junker and overviews the guns there and the main engine. I'd call myself a pretty good Pilot and a strategist but I come very unhandy in spotting and aiming. That's what my friend does very well.

Always when starting a match he takes the Crew-Slot right under mine (the captain-slot) and ingame I brief the crew:

I tell them my and the ship's name
(so they can identify my voice and the ship's name in the upper left corner),
'cause my ship got a german name i tell them what it means in english
(socialize and let the crew get used to my voice, because i talk pretty much and give many orders),
tell them what weapons are fitted and what they're best used for
(newbies learn something about the weapons, new crew-members dont have to explore the ship, it also tells something about the tactics),
I introduce my "deck officer" (my friend).
Then I finish it with a joke
("we don't have any parachutes or life jackets, so keep fighting")
Welcome on board, good luck and have fun.

Sometimes it happens I have to steer the ship out of the heat of the battle, my fellow captains are vomiting through the captains-chat into my ears, my crew falls into panic and all I can just say in that moment is "Keep calm and repair the ship"...I'm glad I have a first mate who takes control of the crew and gives clear repair orders or tells them which place they have to take. I'm communicating with him over TeamSpeak or Party chat (If there's no one else).

What I want to say is: Let there be an official first mate. It makes everyone's life easier and many people in GOIO seriously dont want to be the boss.
