When does ammo reset?

So...sometimes, when I'm gunning and I have to leave my gun to do something else (man a different gun, emergency repairs, etc...), I come back to my gun and the same alternate ammo that I had loaded in it is still there. However, other times, I come back and it has reset to regular ammo.

What are the mechanics behind this?

Ok so ammo will reset, if you leave the gun, and it finishes it's reload sequence.... if you get to the gun before the sequence ends, you will have your same ammo selection... Also keep in mind, that if you switch ammo, and then get off the gun, it will automatically switch back to the previous ammo selected

It took me a long time to figure out the exact mechanics of gun ammo mods.  It'd be nice if they were illustrated a bit clearer in game.
