Maybe the applaud system has been poorly used/abused. I know I've received a bunch for no apparent reason.

I think it's the fact that it's not very simple to use. When you recommend someone, all you have to do is click on their name. When you applaud them, you have to write something meaningful about the said person and that takes enough time/effort that people are willing to neglect it. I've known for one that Dust's used the applaud system alot when it came out and was probably returned the favour aswell.
