I'd recommend reading through:
1.) The World section of the forum. While things there may not be entirely correct there are some things that could certainly give you ideas.
2.) The World section of the home page. There you'll find the overviews as written by muse.
Using these two together should get you on the right track.

Yeah, sadly there's not a lot of concrete lore released. Definitely do what Pies said, but there are a few lore friendly RP threads. Burning Skies and Skies have No Limit are pretty lore friendly, at least in how many people perceive the world and its possibilities. You'll have to filter through pure player written stuff, but those are rather obvious.

Thanks, guys. I was expecting something more limiting, but a chance for a little creative liberty should make writing pretty fun.

No problem. Also Koali, please keep the fourth wall intact, at least in Uncharted Skies.
