To make the combat system more GOI I was thinking about weapons and ranges where there would be 4 ranges
Boarding, Close, Mid-range, and Long. Each weapon would have a multiplier for each range.

The fight check instead of being crew based would be measured by the crew on the guns. So if you are resolving an encounter at long range with a 2 gunner skill crew on the merc and a 1 gunner skill crew on the flack you would be rolling d6+5. However if that same encounter was resolved at close range your crew would be rolling with a +0 modifier because those guns are not effective at that range. Items like lesmok, or incindiary ammo could change the range modifier of a gun.
If an encounter is resolved at boarding rage (heresy I know). Then the entire crew can use their gunnery skill otherwise you are stuck fighting with the crew and guns on a side of the ship the captain selects to face the enemy.
