I think you need to work on making more friends and allies, and don't avoid the Sunday Skirmish!
Don't expect people to invite you to pilot for their team if you have no practice with the crew, it's amazing how competitive Sunday skirmish can get.
Initialise convocations with your higher level comp player friends, ask if they have too many substitutes available to join or make a team!

And lastly: Stalk your role models, join matches, ask for passwords and be the one to take the initiative in convocation.
