Almost all front builds allow #3 to be integrated in a useful manner. the 3&4 pair can be used as primary weaponry as well, but doing so comes along with draw backs. The Pyra can't turn well, which make it hard to maintain side gun arcs and the pyras side-profile from the side is very disadvantageous compared to the front profile. If you use your side weapons, your enemies can shoot at a barn gate of hull armor, and all components are exposed. Whereas when using the front, all components are fairly well covered.

Agreed.  The biggest weakness of the pyra is also one of its greatest strengths: that engine column.  In a close range brawling situation, if you lose even one engine you will likely lose the engagement, and if you are using the side guns as main weaponry, your engines are pretty much totally exposed.  Plus, side guns on a pyra are extremely easy to snipe out, while the front gun hitboxes are strange enough so even fairly experienced gunners can have trouble hitting them consistently.  Not to mention it is easier to ram with the front of a pyra.

I usually take a banshee in place of a flamer, as somebody said: The Main engi needs to be on the hull/engines, and a flamer is a sustained weapon, not to mention that good crews have chemspray.   Slot 4 is usually a spare Carronade, an Artemis, or a Hades, and in 3v3/4v4 a Flare.
