LOL right now it looks like a cross between a conical hat and a Tiffany lamp

all the same, I love where you're going with it.  if the red parts are dyeable, I'd wear it as-is in a heartbeat.

This is the hat I used for the texture and inspiration. I wanted something more than a straw hat with steampunky bits tossed on, and the light colored designs reminded me of brass. The intention of the final texture will be to have the red parts dye-able.

If I had to pick a hat, this would be it.  Love love love the design, and I'm sure it'll be released as soon as it hits the Workshop.

I might have it sit back further on the head so it looks like the guy can see out of it XD  beyond that, I'm just in awe.  you're really good at this.

If we wanted to make it derpy and steampunk-y, just cut holes in the hat and put in adjustable spyglasses.
