It's 20 seconds, but the countdown doesn't start until the cooldown is over.

Just like extinguishers don't give parts any fire immunity, except that for the duration of cooldown, they do.

Yea, either way, the simplest explanation is that "starting from the time you spray, you have 25 seconds total of immunity" so I guess its the same regardless =D

Here is a peculiarity: Spray, unlike buff, lasts past component death. If you spray a hull and it goes down, you can build it up again and mallet immediately without spraying again. That should save you some time and (as long as you don't die) help mitigate some of the "should i spray or mallet" when the hull is about to drop to flamer + gat or something. Also the solution to "flamer + gat" is ignore the hull, kill them before they kill you.

I have made many clutch kills with only one turning engine up, the same can not be said of the main engine.

Yes, also turning engines are always light engines and are much easier to rebuild than the main engine. However, when being flamed, if your spray isn't up on the engines, don't fret, and mallet instead. You can keep them up even with 20 stacks. Don't waste time trying to put out fires and instead focus on counting correctly for the hull.

Wouldn't that mean whoever can tank hull the hardest wins? ;)

Pretty much, but if you can't outkill a flamer+gat combo something is wrong with your ship XD Unless you're both flamer+gat o.o in which case the only solution is to both moonshine ram into eternal glory.

I'm not entirely clear on what the difference is supposed to be between these two things.
