So I just started to wonder something. How does the GoI website and the GoI Client interact with each other?
I noticed that you don't make an account on the forum, rather you make your account in-game and you automatically get a forum account.
And that your in-game levels automatically update.

Does the game update an SQL whenever something happens? Or is there something more?
Or maybe it's just a secret that I'm never allowed to know.

To answer your question as bluntly and vaguely as possible - yes, they're linked.

It's my understanding that there is a database that links the two systems and it is refreshed whenever you log into Guns of Icarus Online.

going by my observation, they are not linked by a database, but instead, are linked by an active directory, which also contains the login credentials and levels for each class, which are synced to the site.
