It could help reacting quicker though and improves recovering from bad happenings provided you have the right ammo prepared for it.
How often is an armor rebuild in 1.5 seconds? Quickly load lesmok into the mortar when they move that far away or something. Quickly load burst into the hwacha when they are right next to it. Accidentally reloaded twice? Wait 1.5 seconds and you are good.
Missed the reload of your artemis? Just two secs and you are good.
Compared to feeling completely helpless during a new reload or with the wrong ammo in the right range you wouldn't have to waste as much time anymore.
Switching an ammo type in the middle of shooting is probably only going to happen on a lumberjack or mine launcher, I suppose. On most other guns you only need that one ammo type and the pilot does the range work or you have enough time to switch during a full reload, because you just emptied your clip or something.
