Why does the teammate turn yellow on the Map and compass?

Why do the teammate ships turn yellow sometimes?  This happens in both the Map and on the compass.  Here is a screenshot of a yellow teammate icon on the compass:

That's when they disappear into a cloud. From what I understand, it acts as a 'last seen here' sort of deal. It will remain there for a short while until it vanishes, and won't reappear until they exit the clouds.

haha thanks, I thought it had to do with the hull going down as it goes yellow for a second before it dies.  "Last seen" makes sense.

Hehe, I remember when I was on your mine junker the other day and we were talking about this. Nobody lower than level 10 on that ship and none of us knew the answer.
