I think the sword or even better a riding crop would be a better as a helm useable item for directing your gunners and engineers. However with the new voice communication system it is not necessary. Still a boy can dream of holding his sword aloft waiting for the moment that the enemy ship enters optimal firing range, then lowering with a dramatic bellow of "Fire" while the broadside of a galleon opens up.

Well, you need to ask whether swords really fit in with the lore. As far as I can imagine they would only really be used as ceremonial props and only really by Baronies and possibly Yesha.
