I've forgotten the exact damage numbers, but it was fire-piercing, right?

Yes, but with a hefty amount of fire damage. If one were to assume it was a rapid fire weapon (which the damage numbers indicated could be possible) then it would brutalize heavily: balloons, armor and permahull making a weapon that could single handedly make a kill on it's own while also destroying the balloon. Almost like a super carronade with incendiary rounds.
