Pretty sure that's a performance thing. I can't say I look at the ground enough to notice, lol.

I play with my lighting off because flares and fire.
500% performance boost, and I've got a decently powerful computer.

Barujin:
I agree with this. It would make environments more dynamic and realistic, especially with shadows being cast onto entire ships.
