Endless SPACE (Space.. space.. ˢᵖᵃᶜᵉ..)
Sailorman:
Its a good game, sometimes it feels like cross between Alpha Centauri (random events, bizarre techs, simple tech tree) and Sins of a Solar Empire. (space battles and ship classes).
Its a classical space opera, so you can expect the usual factions, the Evil Empire, the Pacifist Aliens, The proud warrior alien race, The Rebels and so on, you can also make your own faction. The Battle system is interesting, but sometimes you can ignore tactics and Tech and just mass produce ships and win all the battle against the computer using superior numbers.
Overall its a fun game to play against the computer, but the multiplayer is way better.
Sgt. Spoon:
Well, I decided to go a completely different route and bought Stardrive instead. It's real-time, and no where near as deep as endless space, but this game just fealt great. It's funny because I'm way more of a TBS fan than a 4X fan. What I love mostly is the seamless blend between the macro-managing 4X gameplay and microing the battles, everything in the same instance. It's just lovevly to see your fleets of trading vessels run around your trading routes between your planets, while various fleets patrol your borders.
The fact that fleets and ships are fully customizable from what/where you want your weapons, engines, reactors, cargo and bridges is a big plus as well. Hopefully the dev will spit out the promised multiplayer soon.
Squidslinger Gilder:
There has been very few to no games which have offered the level of ship customization as did Pax Imperia 2. Such a beautiful game. Still love playing it. My favorite ship class to create is the escort carrier. Because mounts and such wouldn't be limited to one class of ship other than engine or basic movement mounts, you could do all sorts of specialized classes.
The AI had a trick to it too where when it would see a transport class ship, it would attack immediately because transports were always used for colonizing and were the weakest hulls in the game. So what I did was took the transport hulls and the moment I discovered starfighter technologies, I would convert transports into light escort carriers for my destroyer fleets. The suckers were cheap to build and fast to deploy. Plus because of the quirk in the AI, I could station them in border systems and draw all the enemy fleets to them. The starfighters from the carriers would tear up enemy fleets before they'd engage my main battlegroup and I could replenish losses quick enough to make it a very economical war. At least until enemy fleets advanced into the battleship hulls or researched a lot of missile tech which the destroyers couldn't handle. But even after I researched battleship and carrier hulls I would still supplement my battlegroups with a few escort carriers if only because they were quicker to deploy and I could cut the maintenance costs by a lot.
Squidslinger Gilder:
So I created a game that cannot be completed. Reached endgame, amassed 50+ fleets. Remaining AI are about the same. Declared war and after 1 battle...app crash :D
