I know manticores can be frustrating, even to experienced players, but give the game some time and you'll see a well coordinated crew sticking to their assignments can easily handle the hwacha.  Good flying and positioning alone can mitigate it's effect greatly and if your engines go down the captain automatically becomes another engineer since there's no more need to stay at the helm.
