Spotting enemy ships is a crucial part of combat strategy. A spotted ship’s indicator is visible to your entire team, even without a clear line of sight, allowing you to keep track of them in the confusion of battle. Spotted enemy ships also appear on your map view.

Remember that your ship can be spotted as well! If the eye icon on top of your screen is open, it means the enemy has a fix on your location. To evade an enemy’s sights, put some distance between you or head for deep cloud cover, which will clear any active spotting.
Not just for captains, the spyglass can be equipped by any crew member and is great in the hands of a gunner.

Zooming
A spyglass would be useless if you couldn’t zoom, right? Right Click to start using the spyglass and then use the scroll wheel to change the level of zoom.
